...curious to know what kicks you've found recently (past 2 years i guess). I found the boblo's about a year ago, and it's time for something new...I'm way outdated. Give me some direction if possible.

Thanks for your comments, Jen! Merry Christmas (and Happy New Year!) to you as well. I do think that there is no such thing as wasted effort -- 1 person helped is better than none. However, for a shift to occur, I do believe that intiatives not only have to come from the government, but also from the people themselves.

People here are reliant on help. Not having lived here for 15 years, I don't need someone to help me live my life, but people here do. They have no reason to stop and they won't. This reliance on help energizes the supply for help, and makes being a maid, a driver or a guard a viable career choice.

At the same time, there needs to be more opportunities for pepole to educate themselves. In the provinces, people don't have proper health or educational facilities, thus adding to the problem.

This is my basic understanding of things. I am sure that I'm missing a lot of key facts. But what I do know is that this is a problem that has been around for as long as I can remember.

This has been a different trip for me, partly because I'm more conscious. I am glad that it has gotten me thinking, and I do hope it continues to affect me deeply, even when I'm back in LA, where it is really quite easy to forget.

Merry Christmas Gabe ! I like the description in this entry because its an issue which is sadly prevalent in a number of developing nations and burdened the minds of so many, myself included. I especially like the sincerity and credibility with which you write. It is difficult to empathsize with those without "options", but do you really think that they have no way out ? Being the optimist, I'd like to think that slowly these kids are getting help and a chance at a higher education and a higher quality of life. You're there -- is there any way we can help ?

Thanks for reminding us there are many less fortunate people out there. Definitely, as you put it, restores some perspective to our values and priotities.
